Heavy Rains Flood Elgin

by Katie on September 14, 2008

After three days of nearly non-stop rain, Elgin parks, streets and homes are overrun with water. Driving has become dangerous in many areas and downright impossible in some.  The good news is we have a week of dryness ahead!  According to weatherchannel.com, more rain won’t hit the area until Monday, September 22nd.  Hopefully the week-long repreave will allow local bodies of water to recede back within their banks.

Willard Street just south of Route 19 was closed to traffic due to high waters.

Elgin Island was closed to visitors due to the high water

The lack of human visitors made it a great time for this Heron to check out the park

Dr. José M. Torres is the superintendent of U-46 and he wants to know what community members and parents are concerned about or what questions they have. This is a welcome change from how things have been run for years. Below is what is currently posted on the U-46 website.

He is also reaching out to the people of U-46 by providing a time for parents and community members to meet with him. These monthly meetings are an open forum with both daytime and evening times.

It is hoped that these efforts to reach out to the communities of U-46 will be the beginning of an open sharing of ideas and concerns that will benefit all our students.

Here are the dates and time of these meetings:
